The new Zhengzhou University, founded in July,
2000 by integrating the former Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Institute of
Industry, and Henan Medical College, was one of the top 100 universities in
China for the national "211 project" approved by the Ministry of Education. In
March, 2004, Zhengzhou University became the university constructed by both
National Ministry of Education and Henan Province.
Postgraduates program started as early as 1978 in Zehngzhou University. It
became one of the first group of universities which were awarded the approval
to have Doctor's Degree Program and Master's Degree Program in 1981. Since the
postgraduate education has made considerable achievements and come to its prime
time in recent years, School of Postgraduates was approved to be established by
the Henan local government on the 2nd, July 2004. Sheng Changyu, present
president of Zhengzhou University, tutor for doctorial research students, was
appointed the dean of the College of Postgraduates. At present time, School of
Postgraduates is in charge of the comprehensive office, the recruitment office
of postgraduates, development office, office of Party Committee for
postgraduate works, the office of academic degree, the office of key discipline
development. Since 1978, with managerial level and the
quality of postgraduate students steadily increasing, the postgraduate
education work has made considerable developments and produced a great number
of highly qualified talents. In recent 20 years, 5928 postgraduates have
graduated from Zhengzhou University, 225 of which have received doctor degree,
and 5703 master degree. In 2004, we have enrolled postgraduates 2093, doctorial
research student 133. At present time, the number of postgraduates increased
markedly. There are over 8500 postgraduate students of various kinds on campus,
with full-time research students 5061, 351 of which is doing doctorial program,
over 1000 part-time postgraduates of specialities, and about 2400 students
applying for master's degree.
At present time, there are 72 doctor's degree
programs, 218 master's degree programs and 6 Master's Degree Programs of
Specialities, 7 postdoctoral research stations, 2 national key disciplines, 6
key disciplines granted by "211 project" , 52 provincial key disciplines. The
programs cover 10 main disciplines of philosophy, economics, law, literature,
history, education, science, engineering, medicine, and management. There are
about 110 tutors for doctorial students, about 1000 tutors for postgraduates in
Zhengzhou University. The faculty for postgraduate education which is
proportional in academic credentials as well as age is developing in favorable
momentum. It has made Zhengzhou University an important postgraduate education
base in central China. With a new spirit in this changing world, the new
Zhengzhou University is marching towards the goal of becoming a
research-oriented, international top-level university.
